Frequently Asked Questions
Sciatica is irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve — the longest nerve in the body, running from your lower back through your hips, buttocks, and down each leg. When this nerve is compressed (by a herniated disc, bone spur, or tight piriformis muscle), it produces the signature burning, shooting, or electric pain that can be intense and debilitating.
At Triple Crown, we treat sciatica by adjusting the lumbar and sacral joints where the sciatic nerve originates, combined with myofascial release of the surrounding soft tissue and therapeutic stretches. By removing the compression on the nerve and reducing inflammation in the area, the pain resolves — often permanently with proper follow-through.
We have a 90% success rate in reducing and preventing future sciatica episodes using our treatment protocol. This combines spinal adjustments, myofascial release, and targeted stretches and exercises that patients continue at home. That number reflects years of treating sciatica as one of our primary specialties.
Most patients experience meaningful relief within 4–6 visits. Many feel a significant reduction in pain by their second or third visit. Full resolution of acute sciatica typically takes 6–12 visits depending on severity. Longstanding or severe cases may take longer, but the trajectory of improvement is usually clear early on.
For most sciatica cases, chiropractic care should be your first stop. Surgery and injections are invasive, expensive, and often unnecessary. Studies consistently show that chiropractic adjustments and conservative care resolve the majority of sciatica cases without the risks of surgical intervention. If your case requires a medical referral, Dr. Erik will tell you.
Gentle movement is generally better than complete rest. Prolonged bed rest can actually worsen sciatica by allowing muscles to tighten and inflammation to build. Dr. Erik will prescribe specific stretches and low-impact movements that are safe for your condition while you heal. Avoid high-impact activities, heavy lifting, and prolonged sitting until symptoms resolve.
Common triggers include prolonged sitting (especially on hard surfaces), bending and twisting at the same time, lifting with poor form, sleeping in a position that strains the lower back, and extended periods of inactivity. Dr. Erik will evaluate your specific aggravating factors and help you modify daily habits to reduce flare-ups during treatment.
It can, especially if the underlying causes — postural habits, weak core muscles, occupational demands — are not addressed. That is why our protocol includes home exercises and stretches. Patients who follow through with the at-home component and come in for periodic maintenance visits have dramatically lower recurrence rates.
Not necessarily. Dr. Erik will perform a thorough orthopedic and neurological examination to identify the source of your sciatica. If imaging is needed to rule out fracture, significant disc herniation, or another cause requiring different care, he will recommend it. Most straightforward sciatica cases do not require imaging to begin treatment.
The key distinguishing feature of sciatica is that the pain radiates — it travels from the lower back or buttock down the leg, sometimes all the way to the foot. General lower back pain stays localized. Sciatica may also include numbness, tingling, or weakness in the leg or foot. If your pain travels down one leg, sciatica is very likely the cause.
