Why do doctors discourage chiropractors?

Triple Crown Chiropractic · Published November 4, 2026 · 2 min read

You don’t have to choose sides to get good care.

Not all doctors discourage chiropractic care. Some concerns involve limited or mixed evidence for particular claims, the risks of neck manipulation, unnecessary treatment or delayed diagnosis. Others support selected manual therapies within conservative musculoskeletal care. The useful question is why a specific treatment is recommended—or discouraged—for your condition.

Let’s look at what matters

Separate reasonable concerns from blanket judgments

Evidence for one condition does not prove benefit for another. Research on mechanical neck pain cannot justify claims that spinal adjustments treat infections or unrelated diseases. Physicians may also be concerned if warning signs are overlooked or a patient is told to avoid necessary medical care.

Neck manipulation carries potential risks that should be discussed. NCCIH describes reported serious adverse events as very rare, with uncertain frequency. A balanced conversation neither hides the risk nor claims every adjustment is dangerous.

Coordinated care is more useful than choosing sides

Ask your physician what specific diagnosis or risk makes them cautious. Ask the chiropractor how the proposed plan addresses that concern and whether alternatives or referral are appropriate. Share relevant records with permission.

A good care plan should explain goals, options and reassessment. Avoid promises that one profession has every answer or that a disagreement proves another clinician is wrong.
